Season Highlights 2016-2017

September 10, 2016: Mark Morris Dance Center Open House

September 17 and 18, 2016: ” L’isola disabitata” (The Desert Island) by Haydn. Haymarket Opera Orchestra, with Craig Trumpeter conducting. Sarah Edgar, Associate Director of The New York Baroque Dance Company, is the stage director/choreographer. The story tells of the sisters Costanza and Silvia who have lived alone on a desert island for 13 years after a bad storm forced their ship to port. When they landed, Costanza’s husband Gernando was abducted by pirates. He has spent the intervening years as a slave. Costanza is about to commit suicide when Gernando and his friend Enrico return to the island to find the sisters. And all’s well that ends well. Saturday, September 17th, 5:00pm and Sunday, September 18th, 3:00pm. Location: Athenaeum Theatre
2936 N. Southport Avenue, Chicago, IL 60657.  BOX OFFICE: 773-935-6875

October 8, 2016: Les Arts Florissants, composed by Marc Antoine Charpentier in 1685, is being newly staged in full costumes with new choreography for eight dancers and eight singers. This French masque like allegory draws on aspects of mythological and natural symbolism familiar to Baroque audiences. The story of this short chamber opera begins with the Arts of Music, Poetry, Painting and Architecture, shown flourishing under the glorious and peaceful reign of Louis XIV. The warriors dance and the chorus sings until Discord and his dancing furies enter, trying to hold on to war and revolution. How will this struggle end?
