Basics for a Ball with George Washington

Catherine Turocy, the esteemed Artistic Director of The New York Baroque Dance Company, and Julia Bengtsson are set to conduct two engaging Saturday classes on September 6 and 13, 2025, from 10-11:30 am Eastern Time. These sessions are designed to immerse students in the enchanting world of Revolutionary dance, equipping them with the techniques and artistic expression needed to prepare for the upcoming “An Uptown Ball” at the iconic United Palace, which will take place on September 21st in New York City. Participants will not only refine their skills but also gain insights into the historical context and significance of the dances they will perform, enhancing their overall experience. This is a unique opportunity for both novices and seasoned dancers to connect with the rich traditions of historical performance. For further details on the event and to purchase tickets, please visit Information and Tickets.

This class is for beginners and covers standing, walking and courtesies in addition to the basic dance steps and terminology used in ballrooms during the time of George Washington’s life (1732-1799). Learn dance patterns from minuets, bourees and rigaudons. Glide across the floor, twirl in place and learn how to offer a hand in dancing and how to accept a hand when offered. This class will give you a boost of confidence in joining us on the dance floor, September 21st, at the historic United Palace, 4140 BROADWAY, NEW YORK, NY, 10033-370. Each class will be recorded and available to students.

Basics for the Ball

Two 90 minute classes teaching basic dance steps and patterns of Ballroom dances during the time of George Washington. Fee is $15 per class. Each class will be different. It is recommended to take both classes if possible. Class on September 6 will be taught by Julia Bengtsson and will look at dance at the ball after the American Revolution. Class on September 13 will be taught by Catherine Turocy and will look at dances and etiquette at the ball before the American Revolution.

$15.00

On September 20th at 5:30 hosted by the Morris-Jumel Mansion, there will be another class taught by Julia Bengtsson, IN PERSON! See the details: Get Your Ticket!
