Mission Statement

The New York Baroque Dance Company is a professional dance company dedicated to promoting the advancement of public knowledge of 17th/18th century dance, the foundation of western social and theatrical styles. With the premise that history informs and inspires our contemporary world, the NYBDC researches, reconstructs, reimagines and presents rare works as well as newly created works inspired by history, thus ensuring our dance heritage has a presence in the future of dance.

The New York Baroque Dance Company is grateful for your donation at any level. To show our gratitude we would like to offer you the following until our stock runs dry:

NYBDC Tote Bag for donations above $100

Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour DVD for donations above $250

An opera-ballet by Jean Philippe Rameau with dance companies Kalanidhi Dance, The New York Baroque Dance Company, and Seán Curran Company produced by Opera Lafayette Orchestra, Ryan Brown conducting.

This groundbreaking production includes Baroque, East Indian and Contemporary dance and the stage direction is shared by the three choreographers, Catherine Turocy, Anu Nehru and Sean Curran.

Synopsis: Cupid, the god of love, is in despair because he cannot subject Hymen, the god of marriage, to his power. Later Hymen appears at Cupid’s palace followed by the Virtues. He says that this time he wants Cupid to triumph and the opera begins! In Act I we are taken to the land of Orthésie, queen of the Amazon. Osiris, who has come in peace, charms the Amazons with dancing. Orthésie is won over by Osiris, and a celebration follows. In Act II the Egyptians celebrate the festival of the water god Canopus by the banks of the River Nile. Canopus, in love with a local Egyptian maiden, Memphis, saves her from a pagan sacrifice in his honor and decrees that from now on the nearby town shall be known as  “Memphis.” The Third Act offers a festival of the arts.  Aruéris encourages his love Orie to enter in spite of her lack of confidence. Competitions are held in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments.  Orie wins the singing contest and her prize is marriage to Aruéris himself.
