2014-15 Season Highlights

October 6, 2014 with Opera Lafayette

Opera Lafayette presents the Modern Staged Premiere of Jean Philippe Rameau’s
Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour, ou Les Dieux d’Égypte (1747)
Libretto by Louis de Cahusac

Opera Lafayette opens its 20th season with Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour, ou Les Dieux d’Égypte (The Celebrations of Marriage and Love, or the Gods of Egypt), the last of Rameau’s large-scale opéras-ballets to be revived and performed in recent times. Join an international cast on a mythical journey from conflict to unity though expressions of eternal love. Three critically acclaimed dance companies– representing Egyptians, Amazons, and Gods of the Nile–weave this romantic tale into seven magnificent ballets, complementing the musicality of cast and chorus. Grace and movement are prevalent throughout the evening, as each act is directed by one of the production’s three contributing choreographers:Catherine Turocy of the New York Baroque Dance Company, Anuradha Nehru of Kalanidhi Dance, and Seán Curran of the Seán Curran Company.

Performance Timing:  Act I – 60 min.; Intermission – 15 min.; Act II – 80 min.
Performed in French, with English supertitles.

La Danse: Hommage à Jean-Philippe Rameau

Sunday, 12 October 2014, 3pm — SMU Caruth Auditorium

We celebrate the 250th anniversary of the greatest French Baroque composer with a wide-ranging selection of his work, featuring the New York Baroque Dance Company and renowned soprano Ann Monoyios. Featured will be dances, chamber music, Pièces de clavecin, and two pieces of opera-ballet as performed at the Paris Opera during the Baroque period: La Danse from Les Fêtes d’Hébé, and the prologue to Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour, the latter a fresh realization direct from performances at the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center.
