Part I: Baroque Dance for Musicians taught by Seth Williams with Leah Gale Nelson, violin. This workshop is aimed at musicians especially, presupposes no existing dance skills, and will cover the basics of the baroque dance suite: the allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue. That said, all are welcome. We will discuss the distinctive movement qualities of each dance form, and while avoiding dogma, propose ways in which they might inform a musician’s choices when playing these musical forms.

Week 1/Part I: The Vitruvian Man Dances/Speaks. This 9 hour workshop over 3 days explores Da Vinci’s drawing and explanation of the microcosm/macrocosm in relation to the origins of theatrical dance as well as ballet’s roots in fencing and expressive gesture.
Week 2/Part II: Dance Theory from the Jesuits leading to the “New Baroque.” This 9 hour workshop over 3 days explores 17th and 18th century treatises defining the perfect ballet, many of them written by Jesuit priests.

Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Washington, DC : Caroline Copeland and Junichi Fukuda of The New York Baroque Dance Company revive the music and dance of 18th-century country and court life, including lessons in courtly manners for guests of all ages to join in. A pantomime and Baroque guitar performance by Kevin Shannon add delightful French flair. The Game of Graces and other pastimes enjoyed by French children will prove a challenge for visitors, while others apply their beauty patches—known as mouches—or enter the workshop to create their own work of art.
